I have to say, receiving this honor, I feel like something similar to a mistake has been made, but not exactly; it's more poignant. Like the way a child will say "Daddy, are you sleeping?" instead of "Are you awake?"
WRITTEN BACKWARDS, publisher of three anthologies within which I am proud to be published--Pellucid Lunacy, Chiral Mad, Chiral Mad 2--as well as Michael Bailey's astounding novels Palindrome Hannah and Phoenix Rose (and the upcoming Qualia Nous anthology)--Written Backwards, the one-man literary phenomenon known by the unassuming name of Michael Bailey--has just announced the winners of the first ever Written Backwards DARWA Awards--and hath bestowed upon me the Written Backwards DARWA Voice Award.
Michael describes the award this way:
" . . . the DRAWA Voice recognizes an individual with a fresh, unique literary voice, someone who quite clearly knows all the rules, and is very good at breaking them; this person has their own genre of awesomeness, in other words."
Can this be true? Hubba what? This is a BIG GARDAMMED DEAL. It's hard to express it any more clearly than that without turning it into a novel . . . Come to think of it, that might be a good idea for a novel, someone trying to figure out how to write a worthy speech or something for some honor . . . But anyway, over the years(!) Michael generously accepted "The Inconsolable Key Company" for Pellucid Lunacy, "The Apologies" for Chiral Mad, and then "Welcome Home, All You Uninvited" (one of my maddest stories, and a personal favorite) for Chiral Mad 2. I am beyond grateful for his support. He has quite literally put my writing out into the world, and among illustrious company.
THANK YOU WRITTEN BACKWARDS!--AND BY THE MOST MINIMAL EXTENSION POSSIBLE--MICHAEL BAILEY! AND YES I AM SHOUTING!
There are also DARWA Awards for Presence (Congratulations, Brian Keene!) and Inspiration (Well deserved, Mr. Usman T. Malik!). And there's a cool interesting post explaining these and other winners over at Written Backwards.
When great things like this happen to me, I am never able to fully believe it. Like maybe someone's off stage, holding a rope, ready to tip a big bucket of blood over my head, ruining my prom dress. But that's exactly why writing matters so much. Because I can come back and re-read this blog post over and over. I can start each morning reading it. Any time I'm not sure if I got a DARWA Voice Award, that's all I have to do. Read what is written.
Any typos in the above are the sole responsibility of the "Right-Way" Perverts who go looking for them in everything.
